This is the ReadMe file for the Favorites to Start Menu Registry hack.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi. I'm Adam Porter. One day, I thought that it would be better to put the Favorites folder on the Start Menu. That way, even if you're not running Internet Explorer, you can get at your Favorites. And, you could click on one of your Favorites from the Start Menu and Internet Explorer would startup, connect to the Internet, and go to that Web site. So, I remembered that you could change the location of some of the "special" folders in Windows 95 in the Registry so that programs would look in the location you specified for that folder. So, I hacked the Registry so that Internet Explorer looks for the Favorties folder on the Start Menu. I then decided to put the Registry hack up on Windows95.com so that other people who don't know how to, or don't want to risk, hacking the Registry. Now I know that the word "hack" sounds rather harsh, but this change to the Registry is completely harmless. Note that I do not provide any guarantees as to the safety of this hack. If it, for some strange reason, messes up your computer, I take no responsibility.

REMEMBER: ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEP ONE TO BACKING UP YOUR REGISTRY:

Make sure you have the option to "Show all files" CHECKED. To make sure of this, open the Windows Explorer and click on the View menu near the top of the window, and then click on Options. When the window appears, click on "Show all files." If you do not do this, the Registry files will not be visible in the Windows Explorer.

STEP TWO TO BACKNG UP YOUR REGISTRY:

Go into your Windows folder in the Windows Explorer. Find the files "User.dat" and "System.dat". Copy them to a safe place. If you have a second hard drive, I recommend that you copy them to the second hard drive.

NOW TO FINISH THE REGISTRY HACK:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
You must unzip the files from this archive to a folder on your computer before you can do any of this. The desktop would be a good place. Now that you have backed-up your Registry, you can peform the Registry hack. Click on the file "Favorites Registry Hack.reg" with the right mouse button and select Merge. When the box appears that says "The file was sucessfully entered into the Registry," click on OK. Now open the Windows Explorer and go to your Windows folder. Find the folder called Favorites, and drag Favorites to the folder called Start Menu. And that's all there is to it! Now when you click on the Start button, you will see a folder called Favorites. When you click on it, all of your Favorites will come up. If you click on one of your Favorites, Internet Explorer will start, connect to the Internet, and open that Web site. You can also use this menu while you have Internet Explorer running and Internet Explorer will go to that Web site. And if you add to your Favorites in Internet Explorer while you're surfing the Web, that Favorites will appear in your Start Menu Favorites folder. You can also add to or remove from your Favorites in the Windows Explorer and those changes will be reflected in Internet Explorer.

WHAT I ASK
----------------------------------------------
I only ask two free things for my help with this. I ask that you e-mail me and tell me what you think (my address is startrekfan@geocities.com), and that you visit my Web site at "http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/3323/". Make sure you get the capitalization right in the URL and e-mail address. I hope you like this!

IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT, AND WANT TO CHANGE IT BACK
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well. You really don't like it? Well, all right. I'll tell you how to change it back. Included in the .ZIP file is another .REG file called "Merge to Change Back.reg". Right click on it and select Merge. Then, open the Windows Explorer and go to your Start Menu folder. Find inside the Start Menu folder the folder called Favorites. Drag Favorites up the folder tree to your Windows folder. Drop Favorites onto the Windows folder. That's all there is to it. Everything should work like it did before. Sorry you didn't like it!
